This Staff Nurse position is eligible to participate in our Professional Advancement Model which has SN, SN1, SN2 and SN3 levels.
POSITION SUMMARY: Ability to complete a comprehensive age specific nursing care to the population of patients within the assigned unit/area. The Emergency Department is a high acuity, fast paced regional referral ED. Patients vary from independent mobility to total care and are of all ages. Patients may present with acute, non-acute or chronic illnesses and injuries. Responsible for care of patients assigned to and delegated tasks from CN. Work collaboratively with CN, NT's and Clinicians. Appropriately delegate tasks to NT's, or other RN's.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Current Maine RN license or eligible to obtain. Emergency nursing experience or at least 1 year med-surg. nursing experience. ACLS. ENPC/PALS and TNCC within 6 months of hire.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Capacity to concentrate in a busy and often stressful environment.
Visual Acuity, color vision, hearing acuity, and tactile sensation are necessary to perform assessment of patients including but not limited to: vital signs; patient responses and requests; equipment alarms; answering ambulance radio; description of drainages, lesions; palpation of bodily systems.
The ability to read English, manual dexterity, and visual acuity is required to pass medications including giving injections and performing IV therapy. The nurse must be able to lift 10 lbs. with one hand to attach IV pumps to IV poles. Reaching and stretching may be required at anytime. The nurse must possess the degree of total body strength and flexibility to assist patients with transfers and mobility. The nurse must be able to lift a leg of 20 lbs. to assisting with a total lift of 200+ lbs. patient with other health care workers. Portable O2 tanks are lifted from O2 racks to stretchers to accompany patients. Stretchers, monitors, pumps are moved several times a day to accommodate patient and equipment transfers. The nurse may need to assist with removal of patients from cars and/or ambulances. Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and color vision is necessary to measure body fluids and discard them as necessary. The nurse must possess the degree of respiratory volumes and upper body strength to perform CPR and other patient care treatments. The nurse must be able to stretch, reach, and retrieve equipment from the supply carts or bend to reach equipment supplied below knee level. Standing or walking comprises 85% of the nurse's workday. The nursing staff walk an average of 4 miles a day. 15% of the time may be done sitting at the computer or charting, giving report, collaborating with other health team members for an 8 hour shift. Some 9 hour and some 12 hour shifts are utilized. A nurse assigned to Triage will be required to spend 85% of the shift sitting.
