Provides full range of professional nursing services in the care and treatment of patients on an assigned shift, on an assigned unit. Plans, assigns and reviews the patient care activities of assigned nursing personnel involved in administering professional emergency and routing nursing services and care.Job Responsibilities20% 1. Serves as designated lead worker to lower level staff. 20% 2. In accordance with established standards, procedures and policies, provides full range of professional nursing services in the care and treatment of patients on an assigned shift, on an assigned unit. Provides direct patient assessment, nursing interventions, making patient rounds, preparing and maintaining patient unit records. Transports medication boxes, weighing up to 50 lbs, and repositions patients and transports patients via wheelchair or gives assistance walking to various locations throughout facility. 20% 3. Sets up, operates and monitors special equipment such as aspiration suction equipment, oxygen equipment, ambulance resuscitation equipment and other emergency equipment including EKG monitor. Assists the physician in the use of the defibrillator. Provides security, accountability and key control for forward stock reserve of defibrillator supplies. Pushes a crash cart weighing up to 100 lbs. 15% 4. Plans, assigns and reviews the patient care activities of assigned nursing personnel involved in administering professional emergency and routing nursing services and care. Interprets nursing policy and procedures for patient care, treatment and monitors the same for adherence. Assigns and/or re-assigns nursing care personnel. Assists in the planning, coordination and implementation of continuing health information and educational programs for the facility. Coordinates, implements and participates in health teaching to patients and employees. Attends programs offered by staff development to further enhance professional growth and job performance. 10% 5. Assigns a psychiatrist to do an initial psychiatric examination on all new admissions within 24 hours when nursing supervisor is not available. Requests a medical diagnostic physician or emergency room physician complete a physical examination and medical history on each new admission before the patient goes to the unit of placement. 10% 6. Maintains liaison with security personnel and professional staff to verify continuity of patient care. Serves on medical staff committees, facility committees and professional nursing committees. Assists the professional and para-professional nursing personnel in recognizing and reporting infections and communicable diseases. Provides information to assigned personnel for control and maintenance of records of infections and communicable diseases. Provides information and services to assigned personnel regarding patient and employee immunization programs. 5% 7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.Minimum Qualifications1. Requires (a) graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing and two years progressively responsible professional nursing experience, or (b) a bachelor's degree in nursing and one year professional nursing experience, or (c) a Master's degree in nursing. 2. Requires a licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesRequires extensive knowledge of professional nursing principles and procedures and theory.Req uires extensive knowledge of normal an abnormal reactions to various drugs and medications. Requires ability to provide guidance to nursing care personnel, apply techniques and nursing practices used in therapeutic nursing program. Requires ability to interpret institutional and department policies, rules and regulations to personnel and to apply educational therapy and techniques in the training of nursing personnel. Requires ability to effectively communicate on the phone and in person with other staff and recipients. Conditions of EmploymentRequires ability to lift/carry moderate loads (max 50 lbs.). Requires ability to push crash cart (max 100 lbs.).
