The Student Health and Well-Being (SHW) cluster of the UC San Diego Health System plays a leadership role in creating a strong and active wellness culture at UC San Diego that enables all students to flourish in body, mind and spirit. This includes promotion and the expansion/development of a student health and well-being center, and the transformation of existing departments, under the oversight of the executive director, into a cohesive, trans-disciplinary source of integrated wellness services. The SHW cluster includes the departments of Student Health Services (SHS), Health Promotion Services (HPS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and SHW Administration.
SHS provides primary medical care, including urgent care and support services such as laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray to over 40,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. SHS staff consists of a diverse team of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists, x-ray technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, medical lab assistants, optometrists, medical assistants, health educators, administrative and other healthcare professionals. SHS provides integrated clinical services to address the medical needs of the individual students, as well as to foster the well-being of the students as a whole person. In addition, SHS oversees the public health needs of the campus community. SHS is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care and is fully committed to self examination, peer review, and quality control through the utilization of data, outcome, and patient experience measurements.
The Student Health Clinical Nurse 1 is responsible for providing ambulatory nursing assessment and care of primary health and urgent care patients in a student health setting. The role includes triage, health education and counseling with a particular focus on urgent care, women’s health & family planning and immunization. Part of the role involves assisting in the process of UCSD University health requirements including immunization and tuberculosis compliance.
Current, valid, State of California Registered Nurses License.
Current BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.
Must have less than 6 months of working RN experience.
Demonstrated experience in ambulatory care.
Demonstrated experience in an Urgent Care or Emergency Room.
Demonstrated knowledge of reproductive health care and women’s health issues including methods of contraception, sexually transmitted infection, pap smears and pregnancy.
Exceptional clinical record keeping and organizational skills. Demonstrated experience in using electronic medical records and understanding of medical record management. Skill to keep organized and concise records.
Knowledge of routine, required and travel vaccinations pertinent to the college-age population, as per CDC guidelines.
Cultural competency in working with diverse populations including excellent communication skills and advocacy skills.
At all times, demonstrate the characteristics of professionalism in attire, attitude, conversation, behavior and attentiveness to others. All staff members are required to uphold the UCSD Principles of Community and to promote a positive and collaborative team environment.
Experience in a College Health Clinic.
Experience in counseling in women’s health and family planning.
Current certification in ACLS.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Emergency Life Support and Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan Training within 30 days of hire.
Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs such as; evenings and weekends.
Ability to telecommute for work, if/when needed and operationally feasible, as determined by department.
