Summary The Spinal Cord Injury Staff Nurse (SCI RN) of the Nursing and Patient Care Services in VA San Diego Healthcare System is primarily located in VA Medical Center, La Jolla, CA. The SCI RN is competent in all the Spinal Cord Injury Universal Core requirements, such as, competency in psychomotor skills, cognitive and affective skills, and recognizing and managing Autonomic Dysreflexia. Responsibilities The duties of SCI RN are, but not limited to, the following: Performs procedures or seeks help when needed, such as IV insertion, blood transfusions, urinary catheter insertion and care. Safely and effectively uses equipment required for patient care. Reports equipment in need of repair. Takes and records vital signs. Recognizes subtle abnormal signs and symptoms and/or changes in patients' condition and responds appropriately. Initiates and implements an interdisciplinary plan of care based on assessments. Uses the Computerized Patient Record System(CPRS) and the Bar-Coded Medication Administration(BCMA) software per policy. Functions as charge nurse/team leader in providing direction to staff in meeting patient care needs. Evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and patients and families in educational needs and discharge planning. Provides leadership in establishing goals, evaluating the plan of care, and in discharge planning. Demonstrates grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills. Demonstrates leadership with compliance with infection control practices, such as hand washing and wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment. Develops and presents two (2) unit-level-in service per rating year. Work Schedule: Monday - Sunday, 1930-0800 & 0730-2000. Overtime, Weekends, and Holidays may be required to meet patient care needs. Specific working hours will be discussed during the interview. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 1-3 Current RN SCI Experience, Wound Care and Ventilator Experience. Demonstrates grade-appropriate and consistent critical thinking skills when caring for patients; and Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Standards of Nursing Practice. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience [If MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN is required.]; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling, Pushing, Walking, Standing, Repeated bending (8 - 12 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Emotional/Mental stability; Keyboarding and reading computer screen (8-12 hours intermittently over scheduled shift).
