I. Basic Purpose:
Provides clinical nursing care, pre, intra and post cardiac catheterization. Responsible for assuring the smooth, timely, safe and effective nursing care of all patients in Cardiac Cath lab as specified by established practices and procedures of the hospital and CV Services. Assists non-nursing personnel within the department and provides education and guidance regarding all aspects of patient care.
II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Complies with and maintains established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required.
Consistently demonstrates appropriate and professional communication behavior toward patients, customers, and coworkers. Cooperates with Management and peers to promote an environment of teamwork and collaboration.
Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
Maintains a high degree of communication with all staff, physicians and other departments in order to ensure appropriate patient care. Promotes a strong relationship with other nursing personnel for follow-up of patient care.
Collects and analyzes clinical data required to complete cardio vascular procedures. This data may include but is not limited to: physical assessment, patient and family interviews, observations and consultations with other healthcare personnel. Conducts preliminary patient screening for CV Services. Performs patient and family education as needed
Orients, instructs, and trains assigned personnel and assists with new staff onboarding.
Flexibility to perform functions within the Cath Lab and Interventional Holding and Procedural areas to assist in smooth operation of the department.
Monitors medical condition of patient's pre and post catheterization and interventional procedures; reports changes to appropriate personnel.
Documents initial nursing histories, assess patients' conditions and develop individual care plans for patients assigned to the unit.
Acts as a patient educator prior to catheterization to explain procedure and answer questions. Explains steps during the actual procedure. Gives post catheterization and interventional instructions and provides emotional support when needed. Assess post catheterization and interventional patient's response to the intervention with respect to patient's pain level, puncture site and overall response documents and notifies physician accordingly.
Maintains a safe, private, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards and philosophy of family-centered care.
Monitors and ensures accuracy of recording on patient medical records. Maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
Assists physicians with the cardiac catheterization, vascular and interventional, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
Clinical expertise in creating and maintaining a sterile field. Assist with the procedural setup of patient to include but not limited to: proper positioning of the patient on procedure table, establishing EKG, O2 Sat and O2 monitoring prior to and during procedure, assist in sterile procedural setup which could include; scrubbing of the groin area, the draping of the patient in preparation of the procedure; or setting of the catheterization and/or interventional sterile trays.
Participates in on-call assignments and demonstrates flexibility to cover staffing as needed.
Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment. Plans and provides equipment and supplies based on procedure and physician needs.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
Attends meetings as required.
Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position as mandated by Martin Health System.
Performs all other duties as assigned or requested.
III. Minimum Requirements (experience, training, and education):
To effectively fulfill this position, candidate must meet the following requirements:
Previous cath lab experience or 1-3 years critical care experience preferred;
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution of higher education within 3 years of hire date. > Current/Active State of FL RN License required - Primary source online verification required directly from State of Florida Licensing database.
Current acceptable CPR certification required: American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Provider OR American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer OR American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers; ACLS certification required.
Training in hemodynamics and specialized equipment, such as balloon pump, Impella, or Angiojet preferred.
